High-Strength Low-Alloy Structural Carbon Steel (HSLA)
A588 STEEL PLATE
A588 steel is a High-Strength Low-Alloy (HSLA) structural steel specifically designed to offer high resistance to atmospheric corrosion. Also known as “weathering steel” or “Corten,” A588 is primarily used in structural applications exposed to the environment where weather resistance is critical. It is commonly available in Grades A and B.
A588 steel is characterized by excellent weathering resistance due to the formation of a protective patina on its surface, which helps slow the progression of corrosion. It also offers high mechanical strength, good weldability, and good formability, making it an ideal option for durable, low-maintenance outdoor structures.
- High resistance to atmospheric corrosion without the need for coatings.
- Excellent durability in outdoor environments.
- Good weldability and workability.
- High tensile and impact strength.
- Lower maintenance requirements over time.
- Ideal for visible structures thanks to its natural aesthetic finish.
- Urban infrastructure: bridges, viaducts, and pedestrian walkways.
- Architecture: building facades, sculptures, and decorative elements.
- Rail transport: railcars, stations, and structural components.
- Industrial construction: tanks, port structures, and storage structures.
- Other uses: signage, park structures, and public works.

- Plate thickness: Available in a wide range of thicknesses, from thin gauges to heavy plate of 3" or more, depending on requirements.
- Common forms: plate, sheet, and structural shapes.
- ASTM A242 (for thinner thicknesses).
- EN 10025-5 S355J2W (equivalent European standard).
- Corten A/B (commonly associated trade names).
A588 steel is ideal for structural and architectural projects exposed to the elements, where durability, mechanical strength, and the natural aesthetic of weathered steel are essential. Thanks to its ability to form a protective patina over time, it is a sustainable, low-maintenance, and visually appealing solution.
